United Way Labor Volunteers Needed
Over the last 45 years there has been a strong partnership between the South Central Federation of Labor (SCFL) and United Way of Dane County. The most obvious sign of that relationship is the AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison position which is funded by United Way but which reports programmatically to SCFL.
In addition, every standing committee of the United Way has at least one Labor designated seat. This allows Organized Labor a voice in decisions that are made – from the annual workplace giving campaign through the community investment process. Serving on these committees requires a significant time commitment, at least one monthly meeting over a two to three year period, and an interest in the United Way’s work in the greater community.
Currently, volunteers are needed to fill three Labor seats on the following United Way Community Solutions Teams (CSTs):
• Basic Needs CST, which deals with issues of homelessness and near homelessness, meets on the third Wednesday of every month, from 7:30 - 9 a.m..
• Healthy for Life CST, which works to ensure access to health care (physical and mental) for all, meets on the second Wednesday of every month, from 8 - 9:30 a.m.
• Self Reliance and Independence CST, which addresses senior independence and staying in the home of one's choice, meets on the third Thursday of every month, from 7:30 - 9 a.m.
For more information or to volunteer for these committees or other opportunities that might arise in the future, please contact AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison Ann McNeary at labor@uwdc.org or (608) 246-4355.
